Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) is another name added to the Black Widow movie director shortlist, but she is probably not the frontrunner for the job. That doesn’t mean Peirce won’t get the job, though. In the end, it all depends on Marvel Studios’ preferences, as well as the availability of those being considered before her.

Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Iron Man 2. She then went on to become one of the main members of the Avengers. Fans began demanding a solo movie for her, especially since The Avengers set up a compelling history for her character. But until recently, Marvel did not officially have plans to make one. After fans continued to show interest, though, the company started looking into it. Since then, the company has met with many directing candidates and used that expansive search to come up with its shortlist of potential directors.

Collider film reporter Jeff Sneider tweeted that Marvel had added Peirce to the Black Widow directing short list. Marvel originally met with over 65 women directors to discuss their plans for the film. Now, Peirce joins a shortlist that includes three other women: Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome), Amma Asante (Belle) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate). Most believe that Shortland is still the frontrunner for the project, including Variety’s Justin Kroll. However, don’t count out the other women just yet. Shortland’s name does come up far more than the others, so she may already be the sure bet for those who want to put money on it.

A production designer for the film, Maria Djurkovic, also recently signed on to Black Widow. Her previous movie was Red Sparrow, a film that many consider close to what a Black Widow movie should look like. Marvel also tapped Jac Schaeffer to begin writing the script. The company seems committed to having a strong team of women working both in front of and behind the cameras for its Black Widow movie.

Although Shortland is probably the first pick from everyone’s perspective, Marvel adding another name to its Black Widow directing shortlist just gives it more options to create the kind of movie that fans want and deserve. With Marvel’s first female-led superhero film, Captain Marvel, arriving this year, the company has shown that its future is very female. There are even rumors of an all-female superhero movie in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Could Black Widow and Captain Marvel serve as the beginnings of such a team? Fans will have to wait and see.
