UPDATE: Read our breakdown of the Birds of Prey teaser here.
A Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) teaser reveals the first look at the entire cast of characters, including Black Canary and Huntress. The breakout success of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad has resulted in her headlining a movie of her own. Birds of Prey isn’t a traditional solo movie though, as Harley will be teaming up with other female heroes. Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead will bring Black Canary and Huntress, respectively, to life in the film to fill out the trio.
The introduction of Black Canary and Huntress in the DC universe is highly anticipated, and many have been waiting to see what they would look like in the film. But, they are far from the only characters set to debut. Ewan McGregor is going to bring the villain Black Mask to the screen, while Rosie Perez is set to play detective Renee Montoya. Newcomer Ella Jay Basco is attached to play Cassandra Cain and Chris Messina will bring Victor Zsasz to the big screen. Robbie just recently revealed a photo of her own new look for Harley Quinn, and now there’s more.
Thanks to a just launched YouTube channel for Birds of Prey called CheekySneakyPeeky, the first look at the entire cast has been revealed. Black Canary and Huntress’ costumes are shown, while McGregor is noticeably lacking the mask his character is known for. Check out the sneak peek below:
This sneak peek may be only 20 seconds long, but it packs plenty of reveals in it. Starting with shots of Harley’s mallet, Huntress’ crossbow, someone (possibly Montoya) drinking, Cain’s cast, and Canary holding a baseball bat, it does a great job at teasing character details before showing their full looks. When it gets to that point, the footage reveals proper looks at Huntress, Black Mask, Montoya, Cain, and Zsasz - along with more looks at Harley. Black Canary’s look can be pieced together with the bat shot and the close up of her singing, but she doesn’t get a full reveal like the rest. Overall, this is a smart reveal on Warner Bros. and DC’s part as it gives everyone proper looks at these characters before the inevitable set photos arrive since filming is underway.
The costumes and tone of the footage also helps establish what Birds of Prey will be like. Robbie and director Cathy Yan have said before that the goal was to be an R-rated girl gang film, and this footage sells just that - even if none of it will actually be in the movie. While there is a certain amount of grit and realism to the costumes and tone, the teaser is also having fun, something Robbie has promised Birds of Prey will do. Since a sneak peek like this wasn’t expected to begin with, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) appears to be getting ahead of expectations with this release.
